The Wedgwood family was wealthy too. The Wedgwood was believers tat see God as an individual and not a trinity and Charles Darwin was brought up to follow this religion. His father, Robert, was a well respected doctor and surgeon in Shrewsbury area. Charles had 5 siblings and he was the second son in the family. Erasmus, the eldest son, Caroline, Susan and Marianne were older than Charles whereas Catherine was younger than Charles.

Charles’s favorite pastimes were observing the natural world around him and fishing. He also liked collecting things without organizing. These pastimes showed the interest of Charles Darwin, who was a great observer and categorizer.

Charles was first educated by his mother and Caroline and was sent to Reverend Case’s Unitarian day school at eight. A year later, he was sent to a minor public school to join his brother. Charles started studying in Edinburgh University in Scotland in 1825. It was one of the best medical schools in the world. In early 1828, Charles entered Christ’s College Cambridge.
He became a naturalist in 1831 and collected many specimens. He returned home in 1836 to investigate de plant and animal specimens he collected.

Darwin wrote notebooks on transmutation of species. He became a well known author, naturalist and geologist. Darwin gathered as much proof as possible to not let his theories dismissed like Robert Chambers’. In 1844, Darwin formulated a theory of evolution from his notebooks. He published the theory "the Origin of Species" a few years later at 1859. He believed that evolution took place by the mechanism of natural selection; animals and plants compete to live. Darwin did experiments with barnacles, pigeon breeding, seed dispersal and plant breeding. He used other available supporting evidence.

His theory that was published in 1859 was a success. However, the book caused public outrage among the Christians. Radicals and people who did not believe in God believed Darwin’s book and supported the formation of a non-religious society.

Darwin died in April 1882.

I chose to write about Charles Darwin because managed to let many people believe about evolution as others had failed to do so and they created a social scandal and were ridiculed by the scientific community. He proved the theory right with many evidences he had collected. Some evidences were from others who failed to gather enough evidences while the others were his observation when he was on The Beagle as a naturalist. Charles Darwin was also well known as an author, geologist and naturalist. Charles was one of the most well known scientists in the 19th century. I chose Charles Darwin also because his theories are important and people continue to use his theories as a subject for debating as these theories contradicts with the Christian beliefs while non-Christians believe Darwin’s theories. Although Darwin knew that similar theories that others published created a social scandal, he did not give up gathering evidence to prove his theories right. Darwin successfully made people believe his theories.

bibliography :

BOOKS - Darwin by Gill Hands
- A Very Short Introduction by Jonathan Howard
and - Autobiographies edited by Michael Neve and Sharon Messenger
for the information on Charles Darwin.

WEBSITES - www.google.com.sg for the images :D
